Faces from the Mbendjele camps – Mbendjele kamplarindan yuzler

[Yazinin Turkcesi icin tiklayin]
These are the faces from the Pygmy camps of Longa, Mbaya and Enoko from the Likouala region of Congo. We spent 2.5 months with them in 2013. They sang joyfully, walked in the forest and share their cultures with us and made us feel at home. Unfortunately, there is a conflict between these indigenous communities and others including the government, an international logging company and conservation groups. The Pygmies have been accused of bush meat hunting. Mbendjele Pygmies are hunter-gatherers, therefore hunting is their way of life. They have also been trading forest products with farmers in return for village food, pots and machetes for many years. However, because of the increasing demand for the bush meat in growing farmer villages, and the alcohol problem among Pygmy groups, people in camps like Longa and Mbaya sell most of the meat they hunt. Majority of the time they buy alcohol (palm wine and Pastis!), cigarettes and weed. To stop the bush meat trade, conservation groups push the government and the logging company (which is trying to keep its FSC certificate). Instead of attacking the big dealers, Pygmies are often targeted and harassed by eco-guards.

Shortly after we left our field site in June 2013, we heard that all the people that welcomed us friendly in their camps were forced to move to the nearest farmer village and their huts were burned down.

Yesterday, I arrived in Brazzaville with Nik and James (2 other PhD students from UCL). We are flying to Ouesso (a city in the northern Sangha region) and taking the canoe to cross the Congo river and reach to Pokola. Pokola is a fast developing logging town, from where we follow the logging road to find Pygmy camps. We heard from a Survival International Campaigner that Pygmies from Longa were slowly going back to their camp from the village that they were forced to settle in. It is very hard if you want to force these people to settle down, as they are highly mobile hunter-gatherers and move in and around the forest depending on the availability of food resources. Our hope is to find Longa as it was before…

Bolgedeki avlanmayi durdurmak icin, cevre koruma orgutleri hukumete ve kereste fabrikasina (surdurelebilir ormancilik yaptigina dair aldigi FSC belgesini korumaya calisan) baski yapiyor. Yasadisi av ticareti yapan “buyuk abi”lerin hedeflenmesi yerine, siklikla Pigmeler hedef gosterilip eko-bekciler tarafindan tartaklaniyor.

Buradan kereste fabrikasinin actigi toprak yolu takip ederek Pigme kamplarina ulasacagiz. Survival International adli bir sivil toplum orgutu calisanindan duydugumuza gore Longa’dan en yakin koye yerlesmeye zorlanan Pigmeler yavas yavas eski kamplarina geri donuyorlarmis. Eger Pigmeleri yerlesik duzene gecmeye zorlamak isterseniz isiniz zor, cunku onlar besin kaynaklarina gore surekli yer degistiren avci-toplayacilar. Umudumuz Longa’yi eskiden oldugu gibi bulmak…
